The ABCs of Gratitude: Past, Present, and Future

We’ve all heard about the importance of gratitude, especially around the holiday season.  However, gratitude isn’t just a practice that makes you feel good,  it’s a powerful tool to shift your mindset, boost your mood, and inspire a more fulfilling life.

As we gather this Thanksgiving week, let’s explore gratitude by using the ABCs of Gratitude. Gratitude isn’t meant to be just a mundane list that you generate daily. It's about sparking joy and reflection on your past, savoring the beauty of your present, and getting excited about what’s ahead.

A is for Acknowledging the Past

The past isn’t always rosy, but it’s full of lessons, milestones, and moments worth cherishing. Gratitude for the past means celebrating wins, appreciating growth, and even finding the silver lining in challenges.

  • Prompt for reflection:

    • What was a small but meaningful moment this year that made you smile?

    • Who helped shape who you are today, and how can you honor them?

  • Example: For me, I’m grateful for the courage it took to make tough decisions in the past. Those choices led me to where I am today, and I wouldn’t change a thing.

B is for Being Present in the Moment

Gratitude for the present is about pausing to notice life’s simple joys. Too often, we rush through life and miss the little treasures all around us.

  • Prompt for reflection:

    • What’s something in this exact moment that brings you joy—maybe a warm coffee mug, a cozy sweater, or laughter from the other room?

    • Who in your life makes today brighter?

  • Example: Right now, I’m grateful for this very moment—writing, reflecting, and connecting with you. Oh, and my favorite fall candle flickering on my desk doesn’t hurt either!

C is for Cultivating Gratitude for the Future

Gratitude for the future is about hope and excitement for what’s to come. It’s imagining your best days ahead and trusting that they’re on their way.

  • Prompt for reflection:

    • What’s one thing you’re looking forward to in the near future?

    • If you could thank your future self for something, what would it be?

  • Example: I’m grateful for the dreams I’m working toward, knowing they’ll become my reality in time. Here’s to embracing the possibilities!

The Power of Gratitude in All Seasons

This Thanksgiving, I encourage you to carry gratitude through the past, present, and future. Reflect on the ABCs as you sit down with family, walk through nature, or even during a quiet moment to yourself. Gratitude has the power to bring peace to your past, joy to your present, and hope to your future.

What are your ABCs of gratitude this week? I’d love to hear your thoughts—share in the comments!

Happy Thanksgiving, and may your week be full of warmth, love, and a whole lot of gratitude.
