Are you struggling to cultivate a positive mindset? Many of us do, especially when we’ve been stuck in a negative mindset for a long time.
If you’ve been struggling to get out of that rut, try practicing gratitude. Many studies have shown that this can boost the feel-good chemicals you need to regulate stress and embrace a more positive outlook on life.
Ways Gratitude Affects Your Mindset
The human brain is incredible, forming neural connections based on our past experiences. These connections can play a huge role in our mindset and outlook on life and the steps we take to overcome setbacks and respond to challenges.
Focusing on the things you’re grateful for has been known to produce feel-good chemicals like dopamine and serotonin, regulate stress hormones like cortisol, calm the nervous system, and help to increase brain function in the areas that are responsible for emotional regulation and thoughtful response.
The Four As of Gratitude
In order to use gratitude as a way to develop a positive mindset, you first have to understand it. Without a true understanding of the concept, you’ll never be able to develop the lasting habits you need to create change.
Start by focusing on the four As: Appreciation, Acknowledgement, Admiration, and Affection.
Appreciate the positive things and people in your life and acknowledge how they’ve helped you develop positive opportunities and experiences. By admiring yourself and others for the things you bring to the table and showing affection and love toward the most important people and opportunities in your life, you can train your brain to focus more on the positive and less on the negative.
Tips for Practicing Gratitude
Some ways that you can help yourself get into the habit of practicing gratitude include:
Setting aside time and space to think.
Acknowledging your feelings of worry or frustration and finding ways to replace them with gratitude and positivity.
Making your gratitude practice a part of your daily routine.
Keeping a memory jar or journal of situations, opportunities, or people that make you happy so you can revisit them on days when you aren’t feeling your best.
Getting into the habit of reframing your automatic thoughts.
Moving away from your negativity bias and focusing more on positivity.
Making it a habit to show others how much you love, respect, and appreciate them.
Making space for reflection.
Spend more time with the people who uplift and support you and less with those who bring you down.
By incorporating some of these activities into your daily routine, you’ll start to train your brain to think more about the good things in life, than the bad.
